Wiltshire and Swindon Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Wilkinson has reaffirmed the importance of CCTV in tackling crime and supporting communities across the county.
Recent data from Swindon highlights a rise in incidents over several areas, with the Central area alone accounting for over 1,000 incidents so far this year. Other neighbourhoods, including Old Town, Mannington and Western, and Walcot and Parks North, have also seen noticeable increases in antisocial behaviour, theft, and drug-related offences.
A total of 1,100 CCTV cameras are operated by Swindon Borough Council from their control room, with operators monitoring public spaces in real time and supporting the force to respond swiftly to incidents and gather crucial evidence to support investigations. In many cases, footage has been instrumental in identifying suspects, protecting vulnerable individuals, and even preventing crimes before they escalate.
New cameras are also being installed in anti-social behaviour hot spot areas in Trowbridge including the Town Park sports courts and Biss Meadows Country Park.
This investment ensures that officers have access to modern, reliable tools that enhance their ability to respond effectively and provide reassurance to the public.
Earlier this week, the Police and Crime Commissioner visited the CCTV suite in Warminster, which uses 49 cameras to cover the town, neighbouring Westbury and the West Wilts Trading Estate.
Mr Wilkinson said: “Everyone deserves to feel safe where they live, work, and visit. CCTV is one of the most effective tools we have to support that goal.
“I was hugely impressed with the setup in Warminster and how closely they work with their local neighbourhood policing team to provide intelligence and evidence which has been used secure significant convictions in the town.
“CCTV doesn’t work in isolation, it’s part of a broader strategy that includes neighbourhood policing, community engagement, and strong local partnerships. Together, these efforts help create environments where people feel secure and supported.
“Our investment in CCTV is an investment in making streets safer. It’s about giving our communities peace of mind and ensuring our officers have the resources they need to keep people safe.”
