Due to the cost of living crisis, community organisations have come together to arrange a programme of free warm places and extra activities in Malmesbury.
Free food and drinks are being provided in many of these sessions, some of which have already started in the Library, the Kings Church and the United Reformed Church. Other sessions will be starting in the New Year, including a weekly Luncheon Club at the Town Hall which will offer older people subsidised meals.
This network of warm places is catering for people of all ages, with extended free activities which already take place, plus some new ones. There are also spaces where people can just relax on their own, if they so wish. All venues are welcoming and friendly.
Full details of the additional free sessions and activities programme will be published shortly. Also included will be information and contact details of organisations providing help and advice, including those available locally.
The work is being led by Town Mayor, Cllr. Kim Power and Cllr. Gavin Grant, Deputy Mayor and Wiltshire Councillor and includes the main venues in the town which are open to the public. So far, those organisations contributing to the programme in Malmesbury are the Abbey, Activity Zone, Co-Op, HEALS, Kings Church, Library, Malmesbury Town Council, Malmesbury and Villages Community Area Partnership, Riverside Community Centre, St. Aldhelm’s Church, United Reformed Church and the Wiltshire Council Area Board.
Mayor of Malmesbury, Cllr. Kim Power: “Many are facing a tough time this winter and are finding it difficult to afford heating. Other skyrocketing bills are also a worry. One way people can reduce their heating bill is by spending time in a warm place, outside of their home. So, huge thanks to all involved for working together to make this possible and to the Wiltshire Council Area Board for providing grant funding and support for the programme.”
